The Victory of Good in Snow White and the Huntsman

Image
Recently I had a chance to catch Snow White and the Huntsman and it was an enjoyable reimagination of the fairy tale. It’s a wonderful story about the way goodness brings restoration in a world mired by a corrupted force, a theme which is rooted in a biblical worldview. Ravenna (Charlize Theron) is the evil queen step-mother who murders the King Magnus, ruler of the land of Tabor and father to Snow White. Ravenna then uses her own outward beauty to as well as dark magic to maintain control over the land. Her powers are self-consuming, and using her magic mirror, she finds fair young maidens in order to magically suck their youthful essence to regenerate her aging body. The very land of Tabor also loses its life force, and is riddled with dead plants and trees. The magic mirror informs Ravenna that she can only maintain power so long as she is the fairest in the land, but the late king’s daughter Snow White (Kristen Stewart) is coming of age and will one day be the fairest of

Beyond the Search for the One Great Leader

The thought that some superman like hero can rise up to the occasion and save the day I find to be wonderful. Oh to find that one great leader who can turn the social tide around for the better! But then I also think God would have us look beyond the search for an earthly leader to solve the world’s woes. I think we must seek God, who is the ruler of all things, and in Him we can find the right leader, a man after God’s heart. Samuel the Prophet appointed his sons to judge, but they took bribes and perverted justice (1 Sam. 8:2-3). The people then appealed to the prophet to appoint a king like all the other nations. They were searching for the one great leader to rule and solve their woes. A king would make them like the other nations. Were they supposed to be like the other nations? When the prophet inquired a

Spotting a Cult

“Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints” (Jude 3 NASB). Cult. The word is certainly used in a wide variety of ways. Some might use it to mean “any group of people with beliefs that I disagree with.” The word can also be used in describing group behavior. People united on certain common ideas and values that are typically outside and, perhaps even, taboo in the mainstream of society may be considered a cult. An avant-garde artist who has a significant number of admirers can be said to have a cult following. A new religious group may be considered a cult in this sense; albeit, if it continues to exists over a long period of time, and it gains significant acceptance from the mainstream, it would no longer be considered a cult. The word cult is used in a different in Christian apologetics. A cult, from this pe
