Our Great Sin

Image
If idolatry consists of the worship of a false god or its representation, the I propose a self-centered life filled with concern for just “me, myself, and I” is the fullest realization of the sin. God creates a universe filled with different people, places, and things, but the creature rejects the worship of the creator, and glorifies in self while paying little mind to anything else. All things are disregarded save one’s own personal interests. If there is an acknowledgement of the Creator, or any value placed on others created people, places, and things, it is only for the sake of oneself. Hedonism. The worship of self can easily be summed up in the word “pride.” More precisely, the disdainful and negative sense of pride which emulates from a person full of self-conceit. Recently, I was encouraged to reacquaint myself with the chapter on “The Great Sin” from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity . The first two paragraphs are applicable to the problem at hand. Dawn of Justice and Victorious Sacrifice

Image
Superman dies! A few months back I went to see this way over-due production, and the scene was visually shocking, yet expected. This was the way things ended in the comic bout with Doomsday. Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ’s twist was the foe was something created by arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. This is all part of “ a mythological journey for Superman,” according to film director Zach Snyder , which includes “the birth, death and resurrection.” Accordingly, the final frame includes a faint heartbeat and soil levitating from the casket. Hope of resurrection, victory over the enemy of death, is the yearning within the hearts of many. The very idea makes a fine fixture to incorporate into our Superman mythology. Perhaps we can get a foretaste of this victory in present, like in recovering from a brush with death; yet, the human experience is the reign of death. What if this enemy could be destroyed? For the Christian, the victory over death is rooted in the resurrection of Je...

The Lord is my Light...

If there is any constant in this topsy-turvy world we live, it is found in a God who saves...a God who can be trusted. The Lord opens our eyes to see what is hidden in darkness. He delivers us from those who seek our destruction. He is like a fortress of protection. We can be confident to move forward. Live each day though. Fulfill our mission and life's purpose. WGN

Evangelical Recession…Crash!!!

Image
I was skimming through The Great Evangelical Recession: 6 Factors that will Crash the American Church…and How to Prepare (Baker) by John S. Dickerson and I found things he had to say to be quite chilling. Dickerson is far from a fear mongering “Chicken Little” crying out “The sky is falling;” rather, the guy has done his homework. Looking at various studies on the evangelical Christian church, picking out the common trends observed through those studies, Dickerson forecasts, In the next decade we will see a massive decease in evangelical influence politically, economically, culturally, and financially… We are losing influence because we are shrinking.      We are losing influence because the host culture is changing so much faster than we (or even it) can understand.      We are losing influence because the United States population is booming faster than it was during the Baby Boom, and our movement is not keeping up with the growth....

Blessed be God

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope  through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time ( 1Peter 1:3-6) God you are so worthy to be given blessings, honor & praise for pouring out you gracious mercies to you humble servant.  To rise from the dead, so indescribable & uncomprehendable! Thanks to you alone for bestowing saving grace. Amen  WGN

On Rebukes...

These are the times when few want to be told they are wrong about anything... ...but only those who can receive correction will be in the right state to move on toward the next level. Better is open rebuke Than love that is concealed  (Prov. 27:5).  ~ WGN

Charleston 2015

Image
I am really left aghast in the wake of the June 17, 2015 mass shooting of the nine worshipers in the Emmanuel African Episcopal Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It is heinousness of such an unspeakable act of evil which leaves me speechless. The names of those lives taken can never be forgotten: Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd Susie Jackson Ethel Lee Lance Dr. Depayne Middleton Clementa Pinckney Tywanza Sanders Daniel Simmons Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Myra Thompson Who could imagine the 21 year old lad, Dylan Storm Roof, could commit such a devilish atrocity, for what, but to start a race war. Just what would make one child of Adam and Eve’s soul so corrupt that he would destroy the lives of other children of Adam and Eve, with the intent that other descendants of Adam and Eve would be spurred on to kill off one another? Such an evil is unspeakable. Can anyone every answer the “why” question? The Apostle John, without giving a simple “why” answer, ...
