Superman dies! A few months back I went to see this way over-due production, and the scene was visually shocking, yet expected. This was the way things ended in the comic bout with Doomsday. This is all part of “ a mythological journey for Superman,” according to film director Zach Snyder , which includes “the birth, death and resurrection.” Accordingly, the final frame includes a faint heartbeat and soil levitating from the casket. “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me” (Matt. 19:21) [1]. These are extreme words from the Messiah which the rich man could hardly stomach. Matthew tells us is that the rich man walked away with sorrow. Rather than calling people to take vows of poverty, the Jesus sought to leave the young man and the disciples overhearing the conversation with the understanding that if there ever was going to be salvation for Israel, it would be on God’s terms, and that Messiah’s ministry was intricately woven together with that salvation. Measuring things can be a crucial task. If a car has a broken fuel gauge, the doors open for some major troubles, especially of lots of driving is required. If our rule for living is broken, we can never really measure out the way life is supposed to be lived. We work with the wrong scales for making judgments, and our life decisions will just be off. Watchman Nee saw the importance for having right standard of measure in doing Christianity well. Too often we place the emphasis in our own lives upon the application of this principle to some single detail of our behavior or of our work for him.
