Love in Big Hero 6

Image
Big Hero 6 is a very hilarious animated film about a boy named Hiro Hamada and his robotic healthcare companion named Baymax. Self-sacrifice, redemption, and compassion are virtues explored in the storyline as well. It is certainly good family entertainment. Hiro is a young tech savvy adolescent from San Fransokyo grieving the untimely death of his brother Tadashi. More than just an older brother, Tadashi took on the role of Hiro’s moral compass, guide and inspiration to use his skills to invent future robotics’ technologies at the local university lab. Hiro is also bequeathed his brother’s invention—the person healthcare companion Baymax. Baymax is programmed to diagnose and offer treatment advice for the physically injured, but soon learns Hiro’s pain is of a different sort. When Hiro discovers the truth that Tadashi’s death was homicide, the grieving boy seeks vengeance, and attempts to modify Baymax into a battle droid. Baymax is unable to compute why be is being weaponize...

Christ Pantocrator

Image
I am checking out this Byzantine mosaic—Christ Pantocrator—and my eyes focus on the Greek text on the page opposite to the Lord’s fingers. (The side with the fingers is Latin) Asides from the calligraphy employed, the capital Greek letters can be made out as follows... The same line can be written out in lower-case letters this way... Trying to remember my New Testament Greek, it dawns on me and I say to myself, “Self, this is a quote from the Book of John, chapter 8 verse 12.” Here's the English Standard Version translation of the passage… “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” How beautiful is that! Christ the Almighty (Pantocrator), the Light of the World. Those who foll...

Thanksgiving 2014

Image
These are some crazy tumultuous times indeed! What is there to give thanks for? Great convulsions of pain, sorrow, indignation, despair, and violence explode from the earth. Such things are what life in a sinful and fallen world show. Hope still emerges for us all. God never sleeps nor slumbers. The second advent of Jesus Christ remains, and there will be a day when all things will be set to right. But, who is innocent? Who can escape the judgment to come? Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Give an eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth. If the rightness of reciprocity and justice is true, then everyone at some point must come to grips with just what offenses they have committed against the other, and the number of eyes and teeth that need to be extracted. It’s easy to point the finger to an institution or a person and say, “They’re the problem,” without ever the thought: “Wait a minute, I’m the problem.” The old three fingers pointing back cliché. Judgment Day is c...

Glory

I listened to some Sixpence recently, and one of their seasonal tracks played—Angels We Have Heard on High—and the refrain Gloria in excelsis Deo keeps resounding in my head. But what is this “glory” that one can give or possess? We can say that in one sense glory is action world, conveying the idea of praise. Hence, Gloria in excelsis Deo means “glory to God in the highest.” We can glorify God. Glory is also a quality that characterizes a person, place, or thing, which can be visible or invisible, and it sets the possessor apart as worthy of receiving adoration, honor, and praise. Scriptures especially highlight the glory of the Lord or the glory that God possesses. The most frequently used Hebrew word in the Old Testament translated “glory” is kavod, which conveys the idea of weight or worthiness. One can speak of the kavod of men and women with respect to their wealth, or reputation. But, there is also the glory of Yahweh, which is what He reveals to people about Himself ...

Guardians of the Galaxy Rules!

Image
Yes, I must say that Guardians of the Galaxy is a summer great and arguably the best one out. I really enjoy the story, the action, and the effects. I can never count myself as one of the longtime fans of the comic, neither have I ever owned an issue, but I those who are could say it met all expectations for something that went from print to the big screen. Something that really grabbed me about the Guardians story is it tells of misfits who came together and did something great in saving the galaxy from evil. Starlord (Chris Pratt), a happa alien human kid growing up in1980s but taken from earth to some distant galaxy to be raised as a thief. His solace is the ever so awesome mix tape given to him by his mother. Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a female assassin working for the story’s nemesis Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). Gamora seeks to find a way to get out of the business and make up for all the wrongs done in the past. Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), the byproduct of some crazy gen...
