The Lord is my Light...

Image
If there is any constant in this topsy-turvy world we live, it is found in a God who saves...a God who can be trusted. The Lord opens our eyes to see what is hidden in darkness. He delivers us from those who seek our destruction. He is like a fortress of protection. We can be confident to move forward. Live each day though. Fulfill our mission and life's purpose. WGN

Evangelical Recession…Crash!!!

Image
I was skimming through The Great Evangelical Recession: 6 Factors that will Crash the American Church…and How to Prepare (Baker) by John S. Dickerson and I found things he had to say to be quite chilling. Dickerson is far from a fear mongering “Chicken Little” crying out “The sky is falling;” rather, the guy has done his homework. Looking at various studies on the evangelical Christian church, picking out the common trends observed through those studies, Dickerson forecasts, In the next decade we will see a massive decease in evangelical influence politically, economically, culturally, and financially… We are losing influence because we are shrinking.      We are losing influence because the host culture is changing so much faster than we (or even it) can understand.      We are losing influence because the United States population is booming faster than it was during the Baby Boom, and our movement is not keeping up with the growth....

Job, Wisdom, Suffering and Mystery

Image
One of the beautiful things about the Book of Job is that its wisdom puts us humans in our place in never giving an answer to all the “why” questions. Hubris drives us to formulate platitudes, slogans, and memes to answer some of the world’s most pressing issues, or to settle some deep theological, philosophical, or political debate. But these never really work. As for Job’s case, certain extenuating circumstances remain hidden, i.e. the dialogue between Yahweh and Satan in chapters 1-2, and the reason why the God of the universe permits the righteous man to lose children and property is left to mystery. Much of the Book of Job is poetic dialogue four men—Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar, and Elihu—who want to convince Job all the calamities were some sort of divine retribution. Eliphaz, for example, says, “As I have seen, those who plow iniquity | and sow trouble reap the same. | By the breath of God they perish, | and by the blast of his anger they are consumed (Job 4:8-9). 1 Bildad cont...

MLK - But let justice run down like water...

Image
Here is something I read from What’s in the Bible: The Story of God through Time and Eternity by R.C. Sproul and Robert Wolgemuth, which I think has deep significance for January 18, 2016: But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)  During the years of the civil rights movement in America, this was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s favorite biblical passages. He knew what Amos knew: A nation that disregards the cries of the poor and the respectful treatment of all her citizenry is a nation in peril—a nation out of plumb. As with Dr. King’s upbraiding of complacent Americans, Amos got in the faces of the Jews. He warned them that their offerings and sacrifices were a stench to God’s nostrils because while they were outwardly performing their religious duties, they were treating one another with disregard. The poor were “sold for a pair of shoes” whole the women had “become like the fatted cows of Bashan.” Justice did n...

Blessed be God

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope  through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time ( 1Peter 1:3-6) God you are so worthy to be given blessings, honor & praise for pouring out you gracious mercies to you humble servant.  To rise from the dead, so indescribable & uncomprehendable! Thanks to you alone for bestowing saving grace. Amen  WGN
