Grappling with the Craziness of an Election Year with the Book of Kings

Image
Well this is another election year, which makes the Tuesday after the first Monday in November the terminus ad quem for all the political madness that comes beforehand in the USA. With all the mudslinging, rioting, and overall incivility, it is hard to believe were still have over five months to go. I am going through the Book of 1-2 Kings at the moment, and the refrain “Only the high places were not taken away” caught my eye, and as I began to meditate upon them, I found them to be a bit helpful in grappling with all that goes on during these turbulent election years. As the Dust Settles in Haiti…

Last Sunday as I was getting my groceries totaled up, the checker asked if I would like to make a donation to Haiti, which I did. There were lots of voices chiming in on the Haiti situation, and many of them were quite helpful, instructing people on what they could do to help survivors. I even had an acquaintance share his intention to travel to the island to do some aid work. I say Godspeed! I also heard a few disheartening...

Anne Rice, the famous vampire novel writer, announced on July 28, 2010 via her Facebook that she “quit being a Christian.” Her initial declaration along with subsequent entries created such a buzz in social media realm that she even received interviews on popular television news programs. Note that it was several years ago that Rice announced she embraced Christianity, namely Roman Catholicism, and that her spiritual pilgrimage is explained in a book entitled Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt . But now things have changed. Just how does Rice reason all this out? The following Facebook updates by Rice tell the story: “For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten ...years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My con...
