God Almighty

For the LORD God omnipotent reigneth! Hallelujah!

God is worthy to receive all glory, honor, and praise from people. He is to be worshiped because of who He is. One attribute or characteristic of God is omnipotence. God is all powerful and there is no other like Him. There is nothing that exists that is impossible for Him to handle. He is neither bound by any limitations, nor subject to losing any of His capacities. The works of the Almighty are evident.

God is the creator of all things. The psalmist declares, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host” (Ps. 33:2). God has spoken and the universe came into existence out of nothing. So vast is this universe that if one could take a space ship from earth to the universe’s edge at the speed of light at 186, 000 miles per second—barring the time alterations that Einstein theorized would happen and using earth-bound clocks—it would take 100,000 years until we can make out the spiral shape of our Milky Way galaxy, and it would take 14 billion years until we can get a glimpse of the large scale structure of the universe with its myriads of galaxies (cf. The Privileged Planet DVD, “Journey to the Edge of the Universe.”)

The Almighty enters into the human drama to save people. A consistent refrain throughout the Pentateuch is “I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt” (Exod. 20:2; Lev. 19:36, 25:38, 26:13, Num. 26:41, Deut 5:6). God brought the children of Israel out of Egyptian captivity with great signs and wonders. He sent plagues over Egypt culminating in the Passover, and the Hebrew slaves were set free from their captivity. When Pharaoh’s army attempted to bring them back into slavery, God split apart the Red Sea and the Israelites escaped on dry ground with water on both sides. The Lord temporally suspended the natural course of things for the purposes of delivering His people from destruction.

In retrospect to the great things the Lord had done for the emancipated Hebrews, the prophet Moses declared, “Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived? Or has a god tried to go to take for himself a nation from within another nation by trials, by signs and wonders and by war and by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm and by great terrors, as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? To you it was shown that you might know that the LORD, He is God; there is no other besides Him” (Deut. 4:32-35).
God greatness is also displayed in the incarnation of the Son, who lived among fallen people, died for sin upon the cross, and resurrected from the dead, so that those who believe can have eternal life. When John the apostle saw vision of the scroll, he was sadden for none of the angels were worthy of opening it; yet, he found consolation in the fact that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of Jesse, the Lamb who had been slain, He was worthy to open it. For this reason the angels sing, “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth” (Rev. 5:9-10). What power is this that can take lost souls, give them new spiritual life, and the hope of escaping the curse of sin and triumphing over death?

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised” (Ps. 48:1)
